Sun square Mercury forces growth through friction and tension. When these two — identity, vitality and life direction on one side, thinking, communication and how you learn on the other — lock into a square, charts (and days) get a recognizable signature.
A square separates two points by 90° of the zodiac circle (allowed orb ±7°). This one forces growth through friction and tension. In a natal chart it describes a permanent wiring pattern; by transit, it marks calendar windows when those themes peak.
Expect Sun matters — identity, vitality and life direction — to collide with Mercury matters — thinking, communication and how you learn. The square decides the texture: forces growth through friction and tension.
Right now Sun and Mercury are 70.78° from an exact square — 70.78° from exact today — out of orb, background influence. The aspect is separating.

Aspects are exact angular relationships between planets — a conjunction (0°) blends energies, a trine (120°) lets them flow, a square (90°) creates productive friction. Tianji computes each aspect to arcminute precision with the Swiss Ephemeris.
Conjunctions are the tightest blend of planetary energy, but the effect depends on the planets involved. Our aspect pages quantify orb, element and house context for each pairing.
Classic practice uses 8° for major aspects (conjunction, opposition, trine, square), 3-4° for minors. Tianji applies standard orbs and reports the exact separation so you can judge strength yourself.
